Do you own a diamond?  Do you know what your diamond actually is?

Diamonds were formed very early in the earth’s history, over three billion years ago, as pure carbon crystals.  These crystals, under the force of intense heat and pressure, become embedded in kimberlite, a form of igneous rock.  Amazingly, it takes over 250 tons of kimberlite ore, which must be mined and processed, to produce a 1-carat gemstone!  When diamonds are mined, they look like clear or colored crystal rocks which are referred to as “rough.”  First mined in India over 3,000 years ago, today Africa, Australia, Russia, Brazil and Canada are the greatest sources of commercial deposits of diamonds.  For many centuries, diamonds have held a certain allure and have been a source of great fascination.

The diamond is the hardest natural substance known to man, and the only gem that consists of a single element.  In fact, the word “diamond” comes from the Greek word “adamas” which means “unconquerable.”  A diamond is thousands of times harder than corundum, the next hardest substance, from which rubies and sapphires are formed.  Even after many years of wear, a diamond will preserve its’ sharp edges and corners when most other stones have become worn and chipped.
